Dzi Bead, Reproduction
Probably the most well known of ancient trade beads. Real dzi beads are thought to be the tears of a goddess or mythical bugs. They are believed to contain powerful healing properties and medicinal elixirs have been made of a tiny sliver of ground agate bead. The real beads will cost as much as $1000 per 'eye,' or circle.

Sherpa Coral
'Coral' is a bit misleading. This is actually wound glass. It is a trade bead that is comonly worn by the hill tribe, 'Sherpa,' people of the Himalayas. Each piece is individually hand wound and they may be as many as three hundred years old. I find them only occaisionally in odd places like in Nepal. They are sold by weight .20 per gram.

Mantra Prayer Beads, $108
Each of these prayer malas is inscribed with the prayer, "om me ni pad me hum," on every bead. They come in brass nickle or copper.
Aum= a sound, it is the imperishable sound of the universe at creation. (People chant Om or Aum to resonate with the universe.)
Mani= jewel
Padme = lotus
Hum=a sound, it is the sound of triumph when all beings become enlightened.
The jewel within the lotus represents the mystery of life. It is the budding complexity within which dwells the jewel of truth.
