Gao (Gau, Ghao) are holy reliquaries. Inside you put a prayer, or relic that reminds you to stay on your path.
left - the dharma wheel - a symbol that what you put into the world comes back to you.
middle - the endless knot - a symbol of the endless cycle of death and rebirth.
right - the OM - the imperishable sound of the universe at creation.

What a wonderful idea! In Key West, there's an ancient ceiba tree where people place written prayers in the massive root system of the tree.
